Frequently Asked Questions

Why Childcare?

A career in the Childcare sector can be extremely rewarding. You can make a positive difference helping young people learn and develop early in their lives. Don’t just take our work for it, have a look at our news pages to see real Apprentice stories.

What do I need?

You should demonstrate a desire to work with children and young people and have some form of relatable experience. Ideally you will have three National 5 qualifications including English. However, we understand that not everyone will have achieved this level of qualification and will take this into consideration.

Do I get paid?

Yes! A Modern Apprenticeship is a real job with a real employer who will really pay you.

What age do I have to be?

We accept candidates from aged 16 and over. The Modern Apprenticeship age categories are as follows, 16-19, 20-24 and 25+. The funding is slightly different depending on your age but we can discuss your options with you on an individual basis.

I’ve never been for an interview, what is the process?

Our interviews are relaxed and informal. We find this helps to encourage conversation and explore your skills to work in the sector. We offer interviews both in person and on Microsoft Teams.

How long does it take to complete?

Just like an HNC at college, most people take around 12 months to complete their Modern Apprenticeship. However, some candidates may complete slightly earlier, and for some people it could take a bit longer. It is entirely down to you, your commitment to the work and communication with your assessor.

What will I learn?

You will work towards achieving an SVQ 3 Social Services; Children & Young People qualification. You are required to have this, or and HNC, to work within an early years setting. Both awards are SCQF Level 7 which is the same level as an Advanced Higher at School or HNC at College.

See the SCQF website for further details - scqf.org.uk/interactive-framework/

Do I have to be employed?

You do have to be employed within a nursery, after-school care facility or a similar setting to work towards achieving the Modern Apprenticeship. We can support you to find work within the Childcare sector and then we can get started. If you are coming to us and already in a relevant job role then we can start straight away.

What support will I have?

You will be allocated an assessor who will support you throughout your apprenticeship. We encourage all employers to assign a workplace mentor who will act as your first point of contact within the nursery to support your development and to ask questions.
